Jobing Description

The University of Vermont College of Medicine, in alliance with Fletcher Allen Health Care,
invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Pathology.
The Department is comprised of 43 faculty members, including basic research scientists as well
as academic pathologists who practice in the clinical laboratory located adjacent to the main
University campus. The Chair will be responsible for overseeing and further developing the
outstanding clinical, educational, and research programs of the Department.
The Chair will serve as the Health Care Service Leader of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at
Fletcher Allen Health Care, a health care system comprised of a 500 bed acute care hospital, an
ambulatory care center, and a University-affiliated medical group of 450 physicians, including
30 pathologists. The department operates an active reference laboratory that performs 2.8
million billed tests annually, including 37,000 surgical pathology cases and 5,100 nongynecologic
cytology cases. The department is engaged in multiple outreach endeavors with
community hospitals in northern Vermont, New Hampshire and northern New York.
The Department's research enterprise is comprised of 17 faculty that are internationally
recognized for their expertise in cardiovascular disease, environmental pathology, and
carcinogenesis. Besides these departmental focus areas, other areas of major interest in the
Medical Center's ~$90M research portfolio include pulmonary disease (especially asthma),
various cancers, immunobiology and infectious disease (including vaccine trials), and various
aspects of the neurosciences. The Department's research mission is emphasized by a strong
commitment towards graduate education, a newly re-designed graduate curriculum emphasizing
Translational Pathology and a 30 year NIEHS funded T32 training program in Environmental
Pathology, which supports pre and post-doctoral fellows. Our faculty are consistently recognized
for their excellence in the teaching of graduate and medical students, AP/CP residents and
fellows, and students in the School of Cytotechnology.
Together, the University of Vermont College of Medicine and Fletcher Allen Health Care
comprise the only tertiary / quaternary academic medical center in Vermont and offer state of the
art clinical, research and educational facilities. Burlington, a vibrant community located on the
shores of Lake Champlain between the Adirondack and Green Mountains, offers year-round
recreational opportunities and is frequently cited as one of the most livable cities in America.
The applicant should possess proven leadership skills, be a physician board certified in Anatomic
and/or Clinical Pathology, and have substantial experience in the administrative, teaching,
clinical and research activities of an academic department of pathology. The ideal candidate will
have a strong record of extramural funding and scholarly activity commensurate with
appointment at the rank of Professor, and he or she will have demonstrated success and creativity
in fostering collaborative interactions between clinical and basic science faculty. It is expected
that candidates would have credentials appropriate for a tenured position. Advertising Copy continued: Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, has been retained to assist in this search.

community through their research, teaching, and/or service. Applicants are requested to include
in their cover letter information about how they will further this goal. The University of
